Apartments near OU Medical School could attract students (The Oklahoman)

Second-phase development at the former Page Woodson School in northeast Oklahoma City is set to start this winter with the addition of market rate apartments.

For the past 20 years, the Page Woodson School, 600 N High, has sat vacant on a hill overlooking Oklahoma City's John F. Kennedy neighborhood. The building, closed by Oklahoma City Public Schools, was repeatedly vandalized and set on fire.

Developers Ron and Jason Bradshaw are set to complete renovation of the historic school into affordable housing and community space by next May. The first phase includes construction of an adjoining 68-unit apartment building. Both projects are affordable housing. “What we've tried to do is design a product that will be in keeping with the neighborhood,” Ron Bradshaw said. “Rather than building a 150-unit apartment complex, we want it to be scalable.”

The schematic designs presented Wednesday to the Oklahoma City Urban Renewal Authority show the second phase will consist of seven three-story, five-unit buildings designed by architect Jeremy Gardner.

The Urban Renewal-controlled lots are two blocks south of the OU Medical School campus.

Ron Bradshaw said he anticipates redevelopment of the area. The short distance to the medical school may make the project attractive to students.

“The health sciences campus is a big market,” Bradshaw said. “We are not designing this for students. But we are mindful. There is a student population who may come to us. We've had focus groups to see what is important to them — and it is location, location, location, along with security.”
